Raphael Mechoulam: Life, Research, and Scientific Legacy

Raphael Mechoulam (1930–2023) was an Israeli organic chemist whose research transformed the scientific understanding of cannabis and its effects on the human body. As a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, he became internationally known for his pioneering work in cannabinoid chemistry. In the 1960s, Mechoulam and his research team successfully isolated and identified tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive compound found in cannabis. His work also helped clarify the structure and properties of cannabidiol (CBD), another major cannabinoid now widely studied for its potential medical applications.
